Talking about the research on Gastroenterology i.e., IBS- Irritable Bowel Syndrome. IBS has been defined as a chronic fluctuating disorder with frequent relapses, with altered defecation pattern, also called spastic colon, irritable colon, mucous colitis, and spastic colitis.

IBS is of 3 types IBS-Diarrhea, IBS-Constipation, IBS-Mixed type. The major cytokines and interleukins involved in IBS namely are- IL-6, IL-1-Beta, IL-1, NF-KB, TNF-alpha. The exact cause of IBS is unknown and researches suggest IBS as an autoimmune disease. Though possible causes of IBS include- over-sensitive colon and immune system, bacterial infections in the gastrointestinal tract, and stress. Symptoms of IBS include- cramping, rectal bleeding, abdominal pain, unexplained vomiting, bloating and gas, constipation, and diarrhea.

Experiments and research are being carried out with our drug molecule i.e. ribozyme in vitro and in vivo with effective results in curing IBS by clearing and downregulating all the cytokines and interleukins responsible for causing IBS.
